It's so simple to be wise. Just think of something stupid to say and then don't say it.

The PLO has refused to continue talks with Israel after five meetings in Amman between Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat and Israeli representative Yitzchak Molcho.

The two men are scheduled to meet for the fifth and allegedly final time Wednesday, according to the Palestinian Authority's Bethelehem-based Ma'an news agency.

Wednesday's meeting, sponsored by Jordan and the European Union, is a final attempt to get direct final status talks between Israel and the PA back on track, and sort out the unresolved core issues.

PLO official Hanna Amirah was quoted by Ma'an as saying “the Palestinian leadership would not take a decision to extend negotiations with the Israeli side because the Netanyahu government 'doesn't seek at this stage to achieve any positive progress in the peace process with the Palestinian Authority.'”

Translation:

"Netanyahu will not submit to preconditions, and we don't really want to negotiate. We just want what we want, and Israel can go to hell".

However, Erekat – a member of the Fatah terror faction's Central committee -- used the previous meeting to negotiate the release of all PA terrorist prisoners currently incarcerated in Israeli jails, rather than to focus his efforts on discussing the core issues relating to Israel-PA statehood.

Among the issues Erekat raised at the last meeting was advocating for the release of Hamas legislator Aziz Dweik, who had been recently arrested by Israeli security forces.

Translation:

See post #1, PLUS:

"We never had any intention of engaging in a substantive negotiation. We had a narrow, specific goal, which we acheived."

Time to cut and run.

The whole preconditions thing is a cop out. (If either side has to agree tyo preconditions, then there's no need to negotiste at all). Preconditions are just a way to avoid making any progress.

I agree, the Palestinians for some reason simply don't want to negotiate with Israel.

Perhaps they like their status as an "aggrieved population" that is the focus of so much world attention, and receives millions in aid from the US and the EU.

Perhaps they are afraid of their own "Arab Spring" once their people realize the PA is just as corrupt and kleptocratic as other Arab states.

They exist for the "struggle". There is no means by which they will ever become a state, unless they conduct direct negotiations with Israel. They know this. If they come to an agreement with Israel, and gain statehood, the "struggle" will end, along with the meaning of their existence. The only measures they have taken to create a nation are the economic moves, which were spearheaded by Fayyad. He has been ousted from the government, for fear of his work going too far to create a legitimate entity. The "struggle" is all that matters to them.

Negotiation: 2 definitions...

Palestinian: We get everything we want before we sit down to talk about the things we haven't considered demanding yet.

Israeli: Everything on which we disagree is open for discussion.

Good description--- that's actually what happens, unfortunately. (See cartoon linked to in comment #1.2, above)
