Mideast Ennui: PLO Officials Blame Israel

PLO officials went on the offensive and sought to blame Israel for the failure of exploratory contacts with Israeli negotiators as they met with EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton on Wednesday.

The meeting comes as Ashton visits the region for three days in a bid to keep the meetings from stalling. Israeli officials have already agreed to extend the meetings in hopes of a break-through, but PLO officials are adamant the talks are at an end.

Former PLO negotiator Nabil Shaath told Ashton that a 21 point proposal presented by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu "lacked any detail" and was "rather a composition about peace done by a high school student."

If that's the case, Nabil, then it should be very easy for you to gain an advantage in a negotiation.

President Abbas also dismissed Netanyahu's proposal as "worthless" and said the main obstacles to resuming negotiations are "Israeli settlements, above all in Jerusalem, and settler violence against Palestinian communities."

If Bibi's proposal was worthless, it would seem that Abbas could make a much more "worthwhile" proposal. Also, he should know by know that preconditions are no longer valid in this negotiation. There have been enough of those, all resulting in more violence, hatred and incitement against Israel.

It's broke.

Time to fix it.

PA officials insist Israel agree to the indefensible pre-1967 lines as borders for a future PA state, release all Arab terrorists from its prisons, and halt construction in the 'disputed territories' before negotiations can begin.

Observers note that a previous 10-month building freeze aimed at meeting PA demands was not only rebuffed, but answered with both new preconditions and a unilateral statehood bid at the United Nations in violation of the 1993 Oslo Accords.

Here we have the textbook definition of 'precondition' along with the consequences of bowing to them to the Palestinians. The talks have "failed" because Israel does not wish to endanger itself further.

Ashton is expected to demand Israeli confidence-building measures towards the PA, including freeing some prisoners and removing more security check-points in Judea and Samaria.

However, critics say Ashton is not likely to ask PA officials to make reciprocal gestures towards Israel, raising questions as to whether she is an honest broker and that she is naive about Ramallah's true intentions.

Here is a prime illustration of the one-sided approach from the outside parties that don't understand why this is a futile exercise. If there were any reciprocity of any kind with the Palestinians, there would be a basis for confidence in the process. But they are not even called upon to assist in raising the confidence of a negotiated process.

FAIL

But they are not even called upon to assist in raising the confidence of a negotiated process.

Of course not; a double-standard that allows (expects?) the Palestinians to fail, also deflects criticism back on Israel. Preconditions are BS as they are practiced by the Palestinians, it's nothing more than a stalling tactic---to do nothing!

Yup, Fail.

More than that, lar, it's a tell by the outside parties that the Palis have no interest in negotiations. They figure that if they can gain another concession from Israel, they'll be that much closer to peace. As the last number of concessions have proven, they're only getting closer to war.

Screw me 17 times, shame on you.

Screw me 18 times...

What gets me is why Netanyahu is not coming out more strongly and putting the blame where it belongs.

Otherwise the world will just believe the arabs. That's the only opinion they hear.

In December 2011 PLO officials admitted they were no longer interested in a bilateral agreement with Israel and were, instead, adopting "a strategy based on continuous efforts along with the international community to secure full recognition and full United Nations membership, pursuing internal reconciliation, and keeping up the popular resistance."

It should be acutely clear to all that the Palestinians have no cards to play whatsoever. The Palestinians can declare themselves kings of the world, if they like, but their macho words mean nothing without some considerable military power behind them.

Right now, the Palestinians are a weak, complaining, irritating people who want nothing but the removal of the Jews from the Holy Land. So what? People in hell want ice water; it does not mean they will get it. Israel has put a fair offer on the table. The Palestinians can take it and grow themselves ino a great country, or they can continue to whimper and complain about their situation ... a situation of their making, when they rejected the U.N. deal in 1948.

Israel does not care what the Palestinians decide. If the Palestinians wish to maintain the status quo of Israeli settlement building and annexation, that's fine. If the Palestinians want to begin their own country as outlined by the Israelis, that is fine too. All of Jerusalem is becomming Jewish, and, within the next years, all of Golan and the West Bank will be Jewish as well. By not deciding, the Palestinians have, in fact, decided.

Abbas needs to stop the bleeding. The Palestinian people will not survive another sixty years with their rabid hate for the Jews. The Jews are not going away, and no power on earth is going to make the Jews go away. Palestinians need to recognize the legal, Sovereign Jewish State of Israel, sign a peace treaty with Israel, and finally begin the nation called Palestine.

Take the deal, Abbas! You have no other choice for your people and any future nation you hope to build. Do you wish to remain the "Palestinian people" forever, with no country?
